2021 Overdose Deaths

Rhode Island Dept. of Health has stopped updating most of the datasets around overdoses like tracking fentanyl, drug type, age, gender and emergency room visits. Currently this is the only updated dataset, total deaths by month, though numbers 4 months back are still pending. The blue bar shows full-year data up to 2021, the green bar shows YTD as of the most recent non-pending month for 2021.

2021 Bills Held for Study

Bills in Rhode Island face a big hurdle, making it out of committee and not being "Held for Further Study". Once a bill is introduced and sent to committee, the first vote it recieves is whether or not it should be "Held for Further Study". A bill held for further study is indefinitely postpone, however can be considered again by committee with approval from the speaker. This looks at fate of all the bills in 2021 and how many have made it past being held to continue down the legislative pipeline.

2021Q1 - RI Political Expenditures

Following my post on 2021-Q1 campaign contributions, this post will cover the 2021-Q1 campaign expenditures. This recent quarter saw about $910,856.13 spent in 2,696 transactions across 33 different states. These include aggregate expenditure, campaign expenditure, repayment of loans and refunds of contributions.

National Donut Day - Political Spending

Since 2006, politicians in Rhode Island have had 1,633 expenditures at donut shops for a total of $76,269.09. Probably to little surprise, these are largely dominated by Dunkin'. This post will take a look at spending that revolves around donut shops, from national chains to local shops, highest single expenditure, spending by year and more. Happy National Donut Day!

2021Q1 - RI Political Contributions

Arriving a bit late on 2021-Q1 campaign finance data, which was released at the end of last month totalling $1,507,741.19 dollars received by Rhode Island statewide politicians, down from the $2,777,997.78 received during 2020-Q4. The data includes individual donations, PAC's, interest from bank accounts and loans. This first table shows a breakdown of the top 20 campaign accounts that gained the most money and the source of the funds.

RI Dunkin' Isochrone Map

It's been over 2 years since my reddit Distance to Nearest Dunkin' post and i've been looking for a geo related Python project. So I decided to revisit and update it to address some of the issues with my first map that people pointed out. Mainly, I tackled the "as the crow flies" issue by using isolines that show drive-time and adhere to the roadway limitations.
